These are my notes from The Sealed Nectar by Sheikh Safiur Rahman al Mubakpuri:
Arabs divided into 3 groups:
- Perished Arabs: ancient arabs like ‘Ad, Thamud, Tasm, Jadis, Emlaq and others
- Pure Arabs: originated from progeny of Ya’rab bin Yashjub bin Qahtan, also called Qahtanian Arabs
- Arabized Arabs: originated from the progeny of Ismael, also called ‘Adnanian Arabs
Pure Arabs:
originally lived in Yemen
Two famous tribes:
- Himyar: most famous ancestors were Zaid Al Jammer, Quda’ah and Sakasic
- Kahlan: most famous ancestors were Hamdan, Anmar, Tai’, Mudhhij, Kindah, Lakhm, Judham, Azd, Aws, Khazraj, and the descendants of Jafnah — the Kings of ancient Syria
Kahlan tribes emigrated from Yemen to different Arabian Peninsula before the Great Flood, migrated due to failure of trade under Roman Pressure
Emigrating tribes of Kahlan divided into four groups:
- Al Azd: Tha’labah bin ‘Amr migrated to Madinah and stayed, ancestor of Aws and Khazraj. ‘Imran bin ‘Amr and his family went to Oman, offspring inhabited Tihamah and were known as Azd of Shanu’ah. Jafnah bin ‘Amr and his family went to Syria and started kingdom of Ghassan
- Lakhm and Judham: Nasr bin Rabi’ah who founded Manadhirah Kings of Heerah
- Banu Tai’: emigrated northwards to settle by Aja and Salma Mountains, named Tai’ Mountains afterwards
- Kindah: dwelt in Bahrain but expelled to Hadramout and Najd, settled in Najd, whole tribe soon faded away
Arabized Arabs:
Arabized arabs originated from Ibrahim from a town called “Ar” near Kufah on the west bank of the Euphrates in Iraq.
Ibrahim AS left Ar for Harran and then for Palestine, which he made the HQ for his Message (Tarikh Ibn Khaldun)
Pharaoh gave his daughter Hagar to Sarah, Ibrahim’s wife. Sarah gave Hagar to Ibrahim AS as a wife, Ibrahim AS returned to Palestine where Hagar gave birth to Ismail AS. Sarah became jealous of Hagar and forced Ibrahim to send Hagar and her baby away to a valley in Hijaz, Makkah, by the Sacred House. Ibrahim left them there and went back to Palestine and the story of Zamzam happened.
Jurhum the Second, a Yemeni tribe, came and lived in Makkah with Hagar’s permission before Ismael AS was a young man.
Story of Ismael’s wife:
After Ismael AS became a young man, the tribe of Jurhum, who admired him and had affection for him, gave him one of their women as a wife. Ibrahim AS visited Makkah but didn’t find Ismael at home. Ibrahim asked Ismael’s wife about her husband and she complained so Ibrahim subtly told Ismael to divorce her and get married again.
According to the most common narration, he married the daughter of Mudad bin ‘Amr.
The next time Ibrahim came, he asked Ismael’s new wife the same question, upon which she thanked Allah. Ibrahim approved of Ismael’s new wife.
The third time Ibrahim came, him and Ismael builds the Ka’bah in compliance with Allah’s commandment.
Ismael’s sons:
12 sons:
- Nabet
- Qidar
- Edbael
- Mebsham
- Mishma’
- Duma
- Micha
- Hudud
- Yet
- Detour
- Nafis
- Qidman
12 tribes inhabiting Makkah. Later on, these tribes spread all over and even outside the peninsula
Offspring became untraceable except for the descendants of Nabet and Qidar:
-Sons of Nabet established a civilization in the north of Hijaz, made Petra their capital, ruled until the Romans managed to vanquish their kingdom
-Sons of Qidar multiplied in number and lived in Makkah. From them issued ‘Adnan and his son Ma’ad, to whom the ‘Adnanian Arabs traced their ancestry.
Nizar, Ma’ad’s only son, had four sons:
- Eyad
- Anmar
- Rabi’ah
- Mudar
The Mudar tribes branded out into two great divisions:
- Qais ‘Ailan
- Elias
From Qais ‘Ailan:
- Banu Sulaim
- Banu Hawazin
- Banu Ghatafan
From Elias:
- Tamim bin Murrah
- Hudhail bin Mudrikah
- Banu Asad bin Khuzaimah
- Kinanah bin Khuzaimah
From Kinanah came An Nasr then Malik then Fihr then Quraish
Quraish tribes:
- Jumah
- Shame
- ‘Adi (Omar bin Khattab)
- Makhzum (Abu Jahl)
- Tayim
- Zahrah
- Qusai
From Qusai:
- ‘Abdud Dar
- Asad bin Abdul Uzza
- Abd Manaf
From Abd Manaf:
- Abd Shams
- Nawfal
- Mutallib
- Hashim
Our Prophet ﷺ came from the family of Hashim
