Before Prophethood

These are my notes from The Sealed Nectar by Sheikh Safiur Rahman al Mubakpuri:

His Birth ﷺ :

-born on Monday morning, 9th of Rabi’ul Awwal,

-same year of the Elephant incident

-40 years into the reign of Kisra (Khosru Nushirwan)

-20th or 22nd April, 571 CE

-significant signs accompanied his birth:

  1. 14 balconies of Kira’s palace collapsed
  2. the Magians’ sacred fire went out
  3. some churches on Lake Sawa sank down and collapsed

-circumcised on the seventh day

-first woman who suckled him after his mother was Thuwaibah, the freed slave of Abu Lahab

His Childhood ﷺ :

  • Arab Tradition: Arab families sent children to Bedouin wet nurses to develop strong bodies and eloquent speech.
  • Wet Nurse: Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was cared for by Halimah bint Abi Dhuaib.
  • Stories of Blessings: Halimah experienced blessings due to the Prophet ﷺ, such as:
    • Her old she-camel producing milk unexpectedly.
    • Her mule recovering speed and strength.
    • Grass growing in their barren land to feed cattle.
  • Childhood Incident: Jibril (AS) opened the Prophet’s ﷺ chest, washed his heart with Zamzam water, and returned it, leaving a mark seen by Anas (RA).
  • Return to Mother: After this event, Halimah returned the Prophet ﷺ to his mother, Amina.
  • Mother’s Passing: The Prophet ﷺ lived with Amina until her death when he was six years old, during their return journey from visiting his father’s grave in Madinah.

The rest:

Here is a list of events in the Prophet Muhammad’s life ﷺ before his prophethood:

  • His grandfather, Abdul Muttalib, died when he was 8 years old. He stayed with his uncle, Abu Talib, after that.
  • At 20 years old, he helped his uncles in the Al-Fujjar war by picking up arrows for them
  • At 25 years old, he went to Syria as a merchant for Khadijah bint Khuwaylid
  • Khadijah proposed to the Prophet ﷺ after coming back from Syria after being informed of his character
  • The Prophet ﷺ accepted and they were married. All of his children were born from Khadijah except one. All his sons died in their childhood. All his daughters except Fatimah died during his lifetime.
  • His children were Qasim, Zainab, Ruqaiyah, Umm Kulthum, Fatimah, Abdullah, and Ibrahim.
  • At 35 years old, the Ka’bah was rebuilt after a great flood in Makkah.

Here’s a description of what our Prophet ﷺ was like before prophethood:

-exemplary, ideal man with spotless character

-intelligent, vivid mind, pure nature

-shunned superstitions

-avoided wine, slaughtered meat on altars, idol festivals

-distinguished for modesty, virtuous behaviour, graceful manners

-most honest in speech

-chaste and hospitable

-most truthful (nicknamed “The Trustworthy” by fellow citizens)

-maintains ties of kinship

-helped the poor and needy

-stands with the oppressed for truth
