3. Uthman ibn Affan RA

Name and Lineage:

  • Abu Abdullah Uthman ibn Affan ibn Abu al Aas ibn Umayyah ibn Abdul Shams ibn Abdul Manaf
  • Mother: Arwa bint Kurayz ibn Rabi’ah ibn Habib ibn Abdul Shams
  • Nickname before Islam: Abu Amr
  • Nickname: Dhul Nurayn (Possessor of the Two Lights, because he married two of the Prophet’s ﷺ daughters)

His Islam:

  • Became a Muslim early on
  • Migrated to Abyssinia both times
  • Didn’t attend Badr as he was nursing his wife, the Prophet’s ﷺ daughter, Ruqayyah
  • He was still given share of the spoils of war and was rewarded so he was like those who attended Badr
  • Married 2 of the Prophet’s ﷺ daughters: Ruqayyah and Umm Kulthum RA

His Description:

  • Average height
  • Fair complexion (some say he was dark and soft skinned)
  • Handsome
  • Evident facial bones
  • Broad shoulders
  • Thick hair
  • Heavy beard (dyed yellow)

His Children:

  • 16 children from 7 wives and 1 bondsmaid
  • From Ruqayyah: Abdullah RA
  • From Fakhitah bint Ghazwan: Abdullah al Asghar RA
  • From Umm Amr bint Jundub: Amr, Khalid, Ibaan, Umar, and Maryam
  • From Fatimah bint al Waleed: Al Waleed, Sa’eed, and Umm Sa’eed
  • From Umm al Baneen bint Uyaynah ibn Hisn: Abdul Malik
  • From Ramlah bint Shaybah ibn Rabi’ah: Aishah, Umm Ibaan, and Umm Amr
  • From Na’ilah bint al Faraafisah: Maryam
  • From a bondmaid: Umm al Banin

His Virtues and Excellence:

  • 1 of the 10 Promised Paradise
  • His khilafa began with the beginning of Muharram of 24 AH
  • Khalifa lasted 12 years
  • Died a martyr
  • Angels show modesty to Uthman (Muslim 2401)
  • Abu Sa’id al Khudri RA said: “I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from the beginning of the night until dawn raising his hands and praying for Uthman, saying: ‘Oh Allah! I am pleased with Uthman, so be pleased with him.’”
  • Az Zubayr ibn Abdullah conveyed that his grandmother, called Rahimah, said: “Uthman used to observe fasting all year round and pray all night long except a brief sleep at the beginning of the night.” Narrated by Imam Ahmad.
  • Shurahbil Ibn Muslim reported that Uthman used to feed people the royal food and enter his house to eat vinegar and oil

His Death:

  • Died Friday 13th of Dhul Hijjah (some say 18th), 35 AH
  • Martyred while he was reading the mushaf
  • He was fasting when he was martyred
  • Az Zubayr led his Janazah (some say it was Hakim ibn Hizam, others say it was Jubayr ibn Mut’im)
