- Nickname before Islam: Abu Amr
- Nickname: Dhul Nurayn (Possessor of the Two Lights, because he married two of the Prophet’s ﷺ daughters)
His Islam:
- Became a Muslim early on
- Migrated to Abyssinia both times
- Didn’t attend Badr as he was nursing his wife, the Prophet’s ﷺ daughter, Ruqayyah
- He was still given share of the spoils of war and was rewarded so he was like those who attended Badr
- Married 2 of the Prophet’s ﷺ daughters: Ruqayyah and Umm Kulthum RA
His Description:
- Average height
- Fair complexion (some say he was dark and soft skinned)
- Handsome
- Evident facial bones
- Broad shoulders
- Thick hair
- Heavy beard (dyed yellow)
His Children:
- 16 children from 7 wives and 1 bondsmaid

His Virtues and Excellence:

- His khilafa began with the beginning of Muharram of 24 AH

- Angels show modesty to Uthman (Muslim 2401)
- Abu Sa’id al Khudri RA said: “I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from the beginning of the night until dawn raising his hands and praying for Uthman, saying: ‘Oh Allah! I am pleased with Uthman, so be pleased with him.’”
- Az Zubayr ibn Abdullah conveyed that his grandmother, called Rahimah, said: “Uthman used to observe fasting all year round and pray all night long except a brief sleep at the beginning of the night.” Narrated by Imam Ahmad.
- Shurahbil Ibn Muslim reported that Uthman used to feed people the royal food and enter his house to eat vinegar and oil
His Death:
- Died Friday 13th of Dhul Hijjah (some say 18th), 35 AH
- Martyred while he was reading the mushaf
- He was fasting when he was martyred
- Az Zubayr led his Janazah (some say it was Hakim ibn Hizam, others say it was Jubayr ibn Mut’im)
