5. Talhah ibn Ubaydullah RA

Name and Lineage:

  • Abu Muhammad Talhah ibn Ubaydullah ibn Uthman ibn Amr ibn Ka’b ibn Sa’d ibn Taym ibn Murrah ibn Ka’b ibn Lu’ay
  • Mother: Al Sa’bah bint al Hadrami

His Description:

  • Dark skin
  • Thick hair
  • His hair was neither completely curly nor quite straight
  • Thin

His Children:

  • From Hamnah bint Jahsh: Muhammad al Sajjad and Imran RA
  • From Khawlah bint al Qa’qa’a: Musa RA
  • From Umm Iban bint Utbah ibn Rabiah: Ya’qub, Ismail, Ishaq RA
  • From Umm Kulthum bint Abu Bakr: Zakariyah, Yusuf, and Aishah RA
  • From Sa’dah bint Awf: Isa and Yahya RA
  • From a bondmaid: Umm Ishaq and Maryam RA
  • From al Fari’ah: Salih RA

His Virtues and Excellence:

  • 1 of the 10 Promised Paradise
  • Did not attend Badr but had an excuse (The Prophet ﷺ sent him to spy on the caravan and missed the battle) so he was like those who attended it
  • Stayed by the Prophet ﷺ during the Battle of Uhud and got 24 wounds (some say 75 wounds)
  • The Prophet ﷺ called him the following nicknames:
    • Talhah al Khair (Talhah of Good) on the day of Uhud
    • Talhah al Fayyad (Talhah the Openhanded) on the day of the Battle of Dhat al Ashira
    • Talhah al Juwd (Talhah of Generosity) on the day of Hunayn
  • Quran 33:23 is about Talhah
  • Narrated Az-Zubair bin Al-‘Awwam: “On the Day of Uhud, the Prophet (ﷺ) wore two coats of mail. He tried to get up on a boulder but was not able to, so Talhah squatted under him, lifting the Prophet (ﷺ) upon it such that he could sit on the boulder. So he said: (Paradise) “It is obligated from Talhah.’” (Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1692)
  • Narrated Qais bin Abi Hazim: I saw Talha’s paralyzed hand with which he had protected the Prophet (from an arrow) . (Sahih al-Bukhari 3724)
  • Aishah RA said: When Abu Bakr talked about the day of Uhud, he used to say: ‘That day is entirely Talhah’s day.’

His Death:

  • He was killed in the Battle of the Camel
  • Thursday, 20th of Jumada al Akhirah, 36 H
  • He was 60 (some say 62, others say 64)
  • It is said that Marwan ibn al Hakam killed him
